The Year of Sound is an international celebration of sound and how it enters our lives in so many ways
The Acoustical Society of India (ASI) has taken an initiative to promote the idea of a silent environment throughout India on the occasion of the celebration of World Hearing Day (WHD-2020), International Noise Awareness Day (INAD-2020) and National Symposium on Acoustics (NSA-2020) on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2020; Wednesday, April 29th, 2020; and in November 2020; respectively under the umbrella of International Year of Sound (IYS-2020). The ASI has announced to its Members that the year 2020 will be the International Year of Sound, the global initiative, proposed and coordinated by the International Commission on Acoustics (ICA), to highlight the importance of sound and related sciences and technologies for all in society. IYS 2020 refers to the UNESCO “Charter of Sound” n. 39C / 59 and involves the entire international acoustic community to promote best practices in sound during the year of 2020. IYS 2020 will provide an opportunity to promote the importance of sound in all aspects of our life in India. Organizations are encouraged to consider outreach activities and to be innovative. A lasting legacy from the International Year of Sound in 2020 will be the development of education programs that highlight the importance of sound and in particular, promote best practices in the utilization of sound and presentation of hearing health.
ASI supports the International Year of Sound (IYS 2020) and WHD 2020, INAD 2020 & NSA 2020 are the events scheduled for 2020 in the frame of this initiative to stimulate the understanding throughout the India of the wide application of sound in our daily life and to highlight the benefits of sound while controlling the unwanted noise.
The idea is to invite the National Noise Committee to share with us several events to be coordinated by ASI and its Chapters. The ASI board is already in touch with the officers of the CPCB / MoEF&CC preparing a detailed proposal on potential activities and mutual collaboration in this respect. These activities include the development of material to promote the WHD, INAD other sound-related workshops/seminars under IYS among the youth, the organization of specialized workshops and seminars and parallel cultural activities in collaboration with museums and other cultural organizations. It is very important that the ASI chapters play an active role in this initiative as their help is vital in bringing the message of WHD, INAD, sound week and other workshops/seminars to the whole of India. The ASI chapters may organize their own activities or help in the dissemination of the centrally organized (by ASI) activities in their states. To facilitate and coordinate this mission, a committee will be formed consisting of contact persons from all the States (state Coordinators) which will undertake the task of disseminating the events of WHD, INAD and workshop/seminars in their states and inform the ASI Organizing Committee on possible events organized by them. The ASI Organizing Committee for IYS-2020 consists of Nachiketa Tiwari, PVS Ganesh Kumar, B Chakraborty, Venkata R. Sont, Rita Paikray, SV Ranganayakulu, Naresh Tandon, DD Ebenezer, AR Mohanty, Ajish K Abraham, DN Manik, I Johnson, Venkatesham B, G Lata, Yasser Rafat, SS Agarwal and Mahavir Singh under the leadership of ASI President, DK Aswal for all related matters.
